  1. Would you be able to list out the complementary(sp) spells that Elemental Shamans should look for in a raid/group? For example, I know that the warlocks need to be casting certain spells and it is nice to have a BOOMKIN in the raid, etc, etc. Or do you already have a link/page with that information?

  2. What about publishing a “BiS” list for High-End content ? Thank you. And gratz for your website aswell !

    • I’m not too keen on “BiS” lists because people tend to follow them religiously without pausing to think under what circumstances they might be “best in slot”, or what makes them the best, or what other options might be worth considering and why. However I am going to do a post on 10-man itemisation at some point, which will cover the “best in slot” options for 10-man raiders as part of the discussion.

Hakawa over at The Shaman Tavern recently did a post on what he considers to be the absolute best-in-slot options for 25-man heroic raiders, though!

And thanks for the thanks πŸ˜‰

      • This is one area I feel proficient enough to add my two cents on. This list is good, but not a BiS list. As of 3.2.2, the Horde shaman wanted Suffering’s End in his main hand, and a hit ring over one of the two rings listed (I don’t remember which), but one is an MP5 ring and the other is a 226 iLvl ring. These are the two best options if already hitcapped, but by shedding the hit on one’s mainhand, you can achieve a higher overall iLvl through these slots which translates into more spellpower and haste while remaining hitcapped.

  3. 1) Managing limited-duration haste buffs.

    2) Macroing these CDs into your primary spells without adding latency.

The site is amazing and I would love to talk with you over vent sometime. Keep up the good work.

  4. 3) With another elemental shaman or a destro lock in the raid, how do players find the Fire Elemental Glyph over the Totem of Wrath / Lava?

Currently, I really am struggling to find a 7 minute fight, or ever one that ends over 5 minutes.

  5. Foooooood! Assuming there’s no fish feast being dropped what food should we look for? Spellpower? Haste? Something else?

  6. 1) What are your thoughts on elemental shamans and having to use mail? Do you have any reasonable arguments that can be put forth to a guild forcing us to have to use mail? (In my situation, I’m forced to have to use mail until no clothie or leather main spec character wants an item. Apparently me winning the belt off Marrowgar 25 rubbed several low bidding clothies the wrong way.)

    2) What are your thoughts on constant/stacking vs proc based vs use items? (Eg: Consider the a trinket proccing xyz spell power vs a trinket with a constant running xy spell power vs one with xyz on use.) Is there a time and place for each? Maybe I’m daft/lazy, but I don’t want to have to manage excessive cooldowns and risk accidentally using it at the wrong time.

    3) I believe you have an upcoming gemming post, but when is it worth going for the socket bonus vs just gemming straight spell power? (Consider Earthsoul Boots – 2x 12sp/10haste for 7sp bonus vs 2x23sp – Might be a bad example.)

    4) For the horde readers, what are your thoughts on Orc vs Troll. I’m seeing a trend on my server where a lot of people are switching to Troll for the extra haste. Is the haste gained on a longer cooldown balanced against an Orc’s spell power gain on a shorter cooldown? I’m wondering if they’re right or if they’re just doing it because all the mages are doing it.

    5) With respect to fire totem use: Is the glyph for the totem of wrath still better than lava even if not using Wrath? I would consider dropping Wrath to refresh the buff in a longer fight and then switch back to a more appropriate totem. I’d only lose one global every five minutes to drop a nuke out of the rotation to drop Wrath before refreshing the appropriate totem. (Only if there’s another Ele in the raid.)

    6) Cake or Pie? Please be kind enough to lie to me and say pie.

Thank you for all of your hard work and time.

  7. Out of curiosity, if I have a blue gem slot, and the gem-bonus if I put a blue/purple/green in that slot is a +spellpower (Lets say…5 Spellpower), would it be worth it to put in a Spellpower/Stamina gem (purple), or to just stick with a pure Spellpower gem and forgo the spellpower gain from the gem slot bonus?

    Posted by Kiju | February 8, 2010, 3:08 am
    • Think of it in terms of what you’re missing out on. Usually the best gem is a 23 spellpower Runed Cardinal Ruby, so if you’re using a 12 spellpower Glowing Dreadstone, you’re missing out on 11 spellpower. That means you’d need a socket bonus of 11 spellpower to make up the loss.

Of course, you do need to equip two blue gems to activate your meta, so blue socket bonuses can be very useful. Just only use the best two.

  8. If you could add a “latest version” or something along that line to the download link(s), i’d love you even more than i already do ❀

    Posted by FakeName | March 19, 2010, 2:39 am
    • Do you mean to the file name, or just a note on the page saying what the latest version is?

(I don’t do it on the main filename as that’d mean updating links every time I upload a new version πŸ˜‰ )

      Posted by Charles | March 19, 2010, 10:46 am
      • a note next to the link would be sufficient, filename would be optimal πŸ™‚

  9. I was curious as to the addons you use. Mainly just the shaman specific ones for ele. I heard quite a few suggestions for totem timers but I personally didn’t like it. Thanx alot Insanely awesome website:)

    • Heh, you don’t really want to see my UI – it’s a bit of a mess these days! I use TotemTimers for my totems because I found that once you get used to it, it’s really intuitive and useful – but I only use it for the timers and “Call of…” spell setup; I keybind all my totem spells individually.

I use dotimers for cooldowns and DoT durations but really should swap to something like EventHorizon. Quartz is my cast bar addon of choice which I’d find it very difficult to do without. Most of my other addons are rather generic though – like chat mods or raid frames or whatnot.

Totemz, however, has had several features on addons and Zing has a much cleaner UI than me anyway πŸ˜‰

  10. Hey, first before I even ask, I’m a huge fan of this site and all the work you put into it.

My question relates to elemental mastery, I’ve asked several top geared shamans on my server and they seem to always use it immediately before their first LB after CL. Meanwhile, Zap seems to say that a better order would be Ele-M, FS, LvB, LB,LB,LB… I was just curious if you knew how much dps you would lose / gain between these two orders.

Posted by Eximo (emerald dream) | April 19, 2010, 3:35 am
    • The accepted wisdom has always been to use EM on the first LB after LvB, seeing as LB has always benefited most from both the instant cast and the crit (and now haste) boost.

When EM was changed in 3.3 to grant haste instead of crit, and Flame Shock was changed in 3.3.3 to be affected by haste, questions were asked as to whether it might now be better to use EM in conjunction with a different spell. Hence the option was added to ZAP!. The result is that in theory for certain scenarios (mostly involving 4t10 and very high gear levels), using Elemental Mastery with Flame Shock can sometimes produce slightly higher DPS than using it with Lightning Bolt.

Now the margin isn’t large enough and the result isn’t consistent enough to warrant a real deliberate change in EM use habits, but it does give us more flexibility to use EM when convenient rather than waiting for the first LB after a FlS -> LvB combo, for example. Even an instant cast LvB is not entirely wasted as it begins the cooldown of the spell sooner, allowing us to use it again sooner (in theory).

But basically the “best” time to use EM remains the point at which you’ll be able to get the most possible spell casts off before it expires.

  11. Hello, great blog and love the layout.

I am going from Resto to Ele, have had Ele as offspec. I got the Heroic Version of Althor’s Abacus and figured the 201 static spellpower would be better than the Abyssal Rune. I did some testing, about 1.3ish mins each and 3x each and the abyssal rune was coming out 700-900 dps ahead. Could this be right? I am thinking I need to do 5 min tests on each. What are your thoughts on these two trinkets until I can get the spyglass or sindragosas drop?

PS All the tests were with Ele Master from the start.

    Posted by Bryan | June 17, 2010, 1:29 pm
    • Unfortunately it’s very hard to determine these things through target dummy testing due to the random variance requiring either a massive sample size or a massive difference between two options. Also the lack of raid buffs will affect results.

Abyssal Rune’s an unusually good trinket and it’s quite possible it’d be ahead of Abacus in some situations. The high proc chance means it’s quite likely you’re getting Rune procs during EM, for example. Or the extra static haste may be making your rotation fit more comfortably. Having said that I’d still think it unusual for it to come out consistently ahead on a dummy test!

In a raid there really shouldn’t be that much between them. You could try running it through SimulationCraft though, as it’s probably the most accurate way to assess trinket values. Playtesting won’t really be very useful, I fear, as the margins should be very close.

Edit: also, what Rumble said πŸ™‚

  12. Bryan,
Using the EJ model for uptime, I think Abyssal Rune (25% proc chance, 45s ICD, 10s duration) comes out at about 110ish passive spellpower, with 84 guaranteed haste rating. This should work out to more value that 201 spellpower in most cases unless your haste was stupendously high.

    Posted by Rumble | June 17, 2010, 6:32 pm
    • Thanks to you both,
I looked everywhere and was unable to find anything. I do think you are on to something though regarding the haste and it putting my rotation in a more comfortable spot for cool downs outside of raid buffs.
